Hypoglycemia- sudden lowering of blood glucose level

Hypoglycemia  is the medical term used for the condition of lowering the blood glucose level below the normal level. Specially this can happen for patients taking insulin as a treatment for diabetes. In fact this is a dangerous adverse effect that can cause even death. Hypoglycemia can be identified by the ketone smell (just like the smell of aanamaalu banana) emitted via patient's exhalations.

Symptoms of hypoglycemia

1. severe hunger
2. weakness
3. headache
4. increased sweating
5. tremor
6. palpitations
7. finally---> COMA

How to prevent it?

1. take the correct insulin dose at correct time if you are using insulin
2. take meals at correct time
3. Do not fast too long
4. Always have some sugar or sugar product with you.

How to Manage it?

1. Take some sugar or sugar product if you feel above symptoms
2. In case of coma, admit the patient to a hospital and give 50% dextrose IV
